What Would Happen If…?

Run Lola Run portrays the idea of what the outcome would be if a few seemingly insignificant details were changed. These minor details then cause a ripple effect, and create a completely different scenario and an alternate ending. Run Lola Run reminds me of the description of how the tenth dimension would be imagined (given by one of the links Irene put on this blog, http://www.tenthdimension.com/medialinks.php). Each of the three different scenarios played out in the movie would represent different paths taken in the fifth dimension. Another way of thinking about the different scenarios given in Run Lola Run would relate to one of the examples given by Lev Manovich in “The New Temporality: The Loop as a Narrative Engine.” Manovich uses the example of the Tamagotchi, and how pressing different buttons cause different sequences of shots to occur. Similarly, depending on how and where Lola ran, the outcomes would end up being different. I often wonder what my life were to be like if I changed one or two details.

Beyond the ripple effect of the renewal of each scene, I think that the repetition of red throughout the movie is vitally important. Not only is Lola's hair red, symbolizing a continual renewal through blood. Her running shows this continual flow of time, and when Lola and Manni die they revert to a scene naked all in red. And after the flowing red scene they start anew.
